I am excited to share that the construction of the Community Centre has reached a significant milestone this month: the city received its occupancy permit. Furthermore, the city is targeting the first week of July to achieve “substantial completion,” meaning staff can enter the building and begin preparing for opening to the public later this summer.

There are some items that still need to be completed during the summer months. This is primarily due to delays in delivery and long lead-time items.  These items include:

  • Exterior mesh installation on west elevation
  • Shade structure
  • Digger in sand pit

The park amenities are well underway and expected to be complete by end of July.  Once complete, we will require safety conformance certifications and reviews prior to opening to the public, which we expect later on in the summer.  There are a number of items we are working through which include the water pressure running to the spray pad and completing the multipurpose court.

Miway is expected to begin using the transit stop on site by the fall.  The route will be tested in the summer with MiWay busses to ensure all signage and line markings are in place before going live.

The last two weeks of June has been a busy time on site as the contractor completed the following work:

  • Pool fill, equipment start-up and turnover
  • Gym floor lines
  • Customer service desk
  • Exterior Soffit
  • Asphalt pathways and parking lot
  • Remaining Concrete work
  • Rubber pour in playground and interior pathways
  • Sod and tree planting
  • Interior door installation
  • Building Automation
  • Security

We anticipate opening of the facility to the public close to Labour Day and have tentatively scheduled the grand opening in late September or early October, depending on social gathering restrictions related to the pandemic.  Watch for a launch video I am producing in conjunction with the City to show off the building and amenities and introduce you to the staff who will be managing the operations of this beautiful new facility.
