Construction is set to begin in late May for a new leash free dog park at Churchill Meadows Community Centre and Sports Park, 5320 Ninth Line. Or should I say “dog parks.”
The plans include two separately fenced off areas – one for big dogs and one for smaller dogs. The ‘big dog’ area informally called “Whiskey’s Walk” will be almost 5,000 square metres while the smaller area – “Freddie’s Fairway” will be about 1800m2. The site for the leash free area is the strip of land immediately north of the woodlot and adjacent to the community centre parking lot. Construction is expected to be complete around the end of 2022 for opening in the spring of 2023.
This will be a welcome and much-needed amenity in Ward 10, as we currently have no leash free zones. The closest one – at Union Park in Ward 9 – will be temporary closed and relocated to accommodate the new Fire Station at the corner of Tenth Line and Aquitaine Road, making this new leash free zone all the more needed.
On a related note, please do not run your dogs off leash in our neighbourhood parks or community parks; it’s a potential safety risk to both the dog and other people – and it’s illegal and can be reported to Animal Services via 3-1-1.
