In December, staff provided my office with an update on the construction of Phase 2 of Mattamy Sports Park, the 55-acre recreational space adjacent to the Churchill Meadows Community Centre at 5320 Ninth Line.

Detailed design for the new amenities is largely complete and the project is scheduled to go out to tender in the first quarter of 2023. Phase 2 includes a regulation-sized lit cricket pitch, an additional lit multi-use turf field, indoor tennis facility, public washroom, additional parking and the completion of the measured multi-use trail around the community centre with connections to future trails going north and south of the property.

If all goes well, construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

The City is working out a separate agreement with Premier Racquet Club to construct and operate the indoor tennis facility year-round with six courts for tennis and pickleball. Completion of this domed facility may be as early as spring 2024.

The two leash-free dog parks on the south part of the property, already tendered for construction, and the multi-use trail west of the woodlot are separate projects, rounding out all the amenities to be included in Mattamy Sports Park.

Phase 1 of the park opened together with the Churchill Meadows Community Centre in October 2021 and has been a popular sports and leisure venue for all ages. In 2022, Mattamy Homes entered into a 25-year sponsorship agreement with the city with naming rights for the park, and providing funding to help advance construction and completion of the park’s additional amenities.
